Thysanoptera of Japan

Karnyothrips flavipes (Jones, 1912)

This species is widely distributed throughout the world, and in Japan it is widely distributed south of Honshu. Males are rare and have not been found in Japan. It has two sense cones on the antennal segment III and three or four sense cones on the segment IV (in addition to these major sense cones, segment IV has one small outer sense cone). It is very similar to K. flavicornis from Ishigaki Is., the Ryukyus, but can be distinguished by the largely brown antennal segment III (entirely yellow in flavicornis). It preys on scale insects, but it is somewhat common on dead branches.
